The line between right and wrong has never been so blurred. Triple 9 tells the story of a crew of dirty cops that are blackmailed by a Russian mob to carry out a virtually impossible heist.
Set in modern Atlanta we see a secret criminal group of corrupt cops and ex-special forces led by Terrell Tompkins (Chiwetel Ejiofor) making easy pickings of the big banks. They know how and when to hit the cash cows, and most importantly, how to cover their tracks.
But their good run of luck stops abruptly when Tompkins’ sister-in-law Irina Vlaslov (Kate Winslet), who just so happens to be the head of a tyrannical Russian mafia, forces the group to carry out an impossible heist. They have two choices, carry out the job, or prepare to be gunned down at a moment’s notice.
The only way to pull the job off is to manufacture a Triple 9, the police code for “officer down”. It’s the highest-priority police code, and means that every officer in Atlanta will attend the scene, leaving the city at the mercy of criminals.
So the group of go on a hunt for the poor soul who will be their target. Little do they know that they just picked the worst cop possible.
Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack. This triggers a series of events that will force the dirty cops to expose their true nature. They don’t have chance to get to grips with killing one of their own. It’s a case of kill, or be killed.
The group’s actions trigger an onslaught of double-crosses and vengeful acts. Ultimately it’s greed that becomes the group’s downfall.
Triple 9 is a tale of brotherhood, family and the enemy within. It reeks of corruption but that, along with an impressive cast, is what makes it so gripping. The smorgasbord of great actors and actresses in this movie alone make it a must-see.
Chiwetel Ejiofor gives an impressive performance, powerful yet simultaneously endearing. Kate Winslet as the ruthless Mafia boss is exceptional. Casey Affleck brings real heart to his role as detective Chris Allen.
Woody Harrelson is an absolute joy to watch. His conflict between right and wrong is captivating. Anthony Mackie’s performance is equally enjoyable as the slick cop whose moral compass is in constant conflict with his desire for money.
Triple 9 has everything a decent action flick needs; betrayal, corruption and murder. Don’t miss out on this heart-racing movie.
Triple 9 is due to be released in the UK on February 19th 2016.
